My 1st Presentation, The Art of the Animated GIF (process, product, reflection).

Creativity Presentation/Assignment

(Process)
For my first presentation for this module Intro To Digital Media I and two others that I was grouped with chose to to present our creativity assignment on The Art of The Animated GIF.  17/10/19

animated the beatles GIF

Our goals for the mission
  • To learn about the design and history of the GIF format
  • To learn about the technical specifications of a GIF file
  • Explore cultural practices around GIFs and their uses in different communities
  • Produce and share some animated GIF
We were given a list of suggested tasks on a website called introdm.cdmonline.ie which proved to be very useful in getting us started on our research and get closer to that end goal in which we wished to achieve . Here are some of the suggested tasks
  1. Explore and discuss the resources and reading material
  • Who made the GIF format and why?
  • What is the current legal status of the GIF patent and how has it changed over the years?
  • Where did the very similar PNG image format come from and why?
  • Why are GIFs so popular again?
  • How are GIFs used on Tumblr and what constraints are there?
  • Are GIFs used differently on Tumblr VS Twitter?
     2. Learn about making animated GIFs
  • What are the best tools for making GIFs?
  • What constraints are imposed on GIFs uploaded to various sites?
     3. Learn how to make your own animated GIF
  • Make a simple, 12 frame animation
  • Make an animated GIF from a video clip
  • Make a perfectly looping animated GIF
  • Make a GIF 'meme'
  • Make a GIF that means something
So we set out for work, with all these goals and suggested tasks to help us we made it our goal for the mission to successfully overcome all of them, completely further our knowledge on The Animated GIF and get off to a kicking start for our first assignment/presentation.

Did we achieve these goals?

(Product)
Yes! I feel throughout all of our research on GIFs and making GIFs we definitely achieved all of the above goals .We learned all about the history of the animated GIF and many other things we didn't know before this presentation.

I learned how to make a 12 frame GIF, I used an app downloaded from the apple app store named GIFmaker. I also learned how to make a perfectly looping gif, I took a video from youtube cut out the few seconds I wanted and used a website called GIPHY to perfectly loop it. We also added a bit of humor in our meme GIF which I feel helped our presentation being a success.

We also furthered our skills in working in groups, we done this by meeting up in the library between lectures and labs and meeting before and after college to do work. We faced some difficulties working in groups such as finding suitable times to meet as all three of us lived quiet a distance from one another, but that didn't stop us! We also found it difficult to split the work done in our homes and putting all the work together but we quickly overcame these challenges and difficulties and are even more prepared than we ever were for our second presentation.

The Resources that helped us

There were many resources that helped me and my group partners complete this assignment. Lets take a look at some of the resources that became available to us throughout the course of completing this assignment.

       1. The College Library

The college library proved to be very important to us and it played a major role in completing our assignment. The opening times for the library are 9:15am to 8pm, Monday - Thursday and 9:15am to 5pm, Friday. The library currently has over  24,000 hard copy books in its collection. They also provide a wealth of electronic resources online. This meant the library was very accessible and conductive to us and it became the main meeting place for Killian, Jack and myself to meet up and work hard together on our assignment.

With our timetable being spread out between five days of the week this means that some days more often than not we are left with a one to two hour break between many of our lectures and labs. It would be a shame to see this time wasted and that is exactly what the library is there for. Working hard in the library during our breaks definitely played a huge difference in the grade we achieved as I feel it is easier to work together in a group when you find the time and space in a library where we can openly discuss and talk about our project ideas and goals. The library was also very useful when it came to putting all of our information together and agreeing on final touches as an example, font, font size, colour, images, GIFs etc.

      2. Introdm.cdmonline.ie

The web page Introdm.cdmonline.ie was very helpful and was one of the main sources that Killian, Jack and I used to gather information and ideas. This page gave us a list of topics to discuss and also a list of suggested tasks and goals along with resources and a bibliography. Not only did this provide us with the correct information we needed it also gave us many other ideas on what to research other than the resources provided.

        3. Lecturers
Our lecturers were very helpful to us throughout the making of this assignment providing us with information and feedback weekly in our lab classes. Sean provided us with information about slack, twitter, email and other ways we could get in contact with him if we needed anything. Without the feedback and encouragement we received from Sean our presentation would not have been the same.  He made himself very easy to get in contact with and showed lots of interest in each student.

A Brief Reflection

To reflect on the overall assignment and presentation I would say overall that the assignment was successful. I enjoyed furthering my knowledge on the art of the animated GIFs and all of the topics we discussed throughout. I feel we successfully overcame all of the goals we had set for ourselves and we worked overall well in a group together.

If we were to do this assignment again what I would change is, we could make more animated GIFs rather than so much background information and history of the GIF. This is something I would definitely consider when dong my next assignment I.E more meant on our burger.
