(process)
For my second presentation/assignment for this module intro to digital media I and two others that i was grouped with chose to present our culture assignment on The Internet of Things.
What is The Internet of Things?

It refers to the increasing number of devices that can connect to the internet and communicate with each other. The internet began as a seies of computers connecting to other computers, it expanded to connect smartphones and has continued to connect incressing numbers of devices beyond dedicated computing machinery. The IOT encompasses such connected devices as smart refrigerators, thermostats, lights, interactive speakers, and security systems in our homes, as well as manufacturing robots, automated inventory trackers, and remote sensors, to personal wearables and vehicles.

These devices offer new capabilities and raise new and on-going questions about privacy and security: who has access to the data these devices generate? Who should have access? How can these devices offer security benefits to users without risking attacks by unauthorized users? We wanted to find this out.

Goals for the mission

Our goal for the mission was to present a slideshow for the class including all of the information we gathered through our research as a group and research Conor, Sophie and I gathered in our own time. We planned to use the library for group research in between classes, before and after college. We also planned to conduct a survey to make a pie chart using our classmates which would feature a list of specific questions asking them about IOT devices in their homes.
Find out.
  • What exactly is The Internet of Things
  • Define The internet of Things
  • Find out how many IOT devices people have in their homes
  • How to stop IOT device attacks
  • How IOT will change in the furture
  • History of IOT
We were given a list of readings and suggested tasks on a website called introdm.cdmonline,ie which proved to be very useful in getting started on our research and get closer to the end goal in which we which we wish to achieve. Here are some of the suggested tasks
  1. Take an inventory- or create a map of all the items that can connect to the internet during your day
  2. Consider what The Internet of Things is now. Describe how it affects daily living, security, and work, among other areas.
We also decided to do our own research on IOT other than the information given to us and at the end we plan to put all of our information together and only use the best of it. We also wanted to be more original and come up with some more beneficial information.

How we planned to achieve our goal?

Considering all of the information given to us we set out and began to work. We arranged times to meet up in college in between classes some days and before and after others. We decided which different topics and tasks we were going to research and we would use google slides to put them all into one powerpoint.

Did we achieve these goals?

(Product)
Yes! I most definitely feel we achieved all the goals we had set out for ourselves. By conducting group research and our own research I feel we successfully covered all of the topics and tasks we gave ourselves. We found out exactly what is IOT and all about the history of the internet and all the devices that can connect to it and all of the security measures that come with these devices. I used many useful sources found during my research including the one provided to us on Introdm.cdmonline.ie. (Other websites can be seen in powerpoint)

We carried out a survey asking our classmates what kind of internet connected devices they have in their house. We successfully gathered the information and found out the number of IOT devices the average person might have in their household. Unfortunately we did not think to use a website survey which made the process a little longer than it should have been.

On the other hand we were successfully able to make a pie chart with the information we gathered!

As you can see there are no out of the ordinary internet of things devices here. The main device found in the homes of the people we surveyed with a percentage of 43.6. We came to the conclusion that possibly certain internet of things devices haven't reached Ireland and are maybe more popular in other countries such as America. Another conclusion we came to was that possibly some internet of things devices would be quiet expensive and not affordable for your average student.

During this assignment I found out a lot of useful information about the security issues and flaws that come with IOT devices. Some of these security issues and flaws include

  • Insecure web interface
  • Insufficient authentication/authorization
  •  Insecure network services
  • Lack of transport encryption
  • Privacy concerns
  • Insecure cloud interface
  • Insecure mobile interface
  • Insecure security configurability
  • Insecure software/firmwire
  • Poor physical security
Finding out about all of these security issues/flaws and beneficial and everyone who owns an IOT device should be aware of the risks it cause and how to prevent them.

Overall I think we accomplished all of the goals in gaining an understanding on the internet of things concept,  how peoples lives are affected by devices and an understanding of security risks. We also learned about present and future plans for devices of internet of things.

A Brief Reflection

Reflecting on the project overall I would say it was a success, I learned a lot of new information about the many things that can connect to the internet and the security treats it causes. I am happy with the amount of research we did and the amount of information we provided in the powerpoint although we could have made more surveys. We had all the correct information but I think it looked like a lot of text and didn't flow too well while presenting.

We met up in the library on more than one occasion using breaks in between classes wisely. We successfully used our time there in coming up with challenges for us and overcoming them. We also assigned individual work for us to do at home. The library was a useful resource for using the computers and as a group agreeing on final touches to the powerpoint which include font, sont size, colours and images.
